Using Half of Our Garage as an Office

When space is tight, you have to get creative. I’ve written about the surprise addition of our youngest daughter here. She is such a blessing but welcoming her into our home meant we had to shift some things around. Initially, she was able to sleep in our bedroom, so we had some time, but two years later, it was time to switch some things around.

My son needed to move from his small bedroom upstairs and into my office in the basement. He is quite happy with the move, as it affords him more space, but I had lost my office. It may not seem like a big deal, and in the grand scheme of life, it isn’t. But I do sew with a large industrial sewing machine for income and that sewing machine can’t just go in our living room.

So we decided that we would take half of the garage for an office. I will put my sewing machine in there and my husband will have a place for a desk when he works from home.

We’re a work in progress, but here are a few pics of what we’ve got going on:

What did we do with everything that was in the garage? We purchased a shed from Amazon and relocated all of the lawn equipment and tools there. Since it is outdoors in our backyard, we installed a lock on it for security. Additionally, we plan to acquire a bike locker for our bicycles and place it in the backyard. As for the front half of the garage, we allocated it to store recycling, garbage, some frequently used tools, sports equipment, and my son's fishing gear, which he accesses weekly. I'll provide more details about our shed soon.

From this experience, I've learned that in a small space, every possession must have a purpose and a designated spot. If items lack a designated space, they tend to clutter both physically and mentally, which is the last thing a mother of five needs - ha! If there's no designated space, I either have to create one or part ways with the item.
